Charissa Profile

Emma Curry Professor Cryer Composition 2 15 September 2018 Community of Dance Charissa Dodd did not have any particular interest in dance when she began taking classes at the age of three. Her mother tried putting her in a multitude of activities before settling on dance. “I remember doing basketball, hated that. I did softball, hated it… I remember being in soccer and they always chose me as the goalie” she recalls, laughing. Charissa did not take to dance immediately either, but she realized over time that she loved to perform. As she got older she became very involved in the dance community, both in studio dance, and as a member of the dance team at her school. The dance community has given Charissa friendship and has provided her with an outlet and aspirations for the future. Studio dance and dance team are both forms of competitive dance. Studio dance takes place in a privately-owned space where students practice different styles of dance and often preform...

Local Anime Sensei

Lucy Rascoll Prof. D. Cryer Composition II Sept. 17, 2018 Mitchel Riley: Local Anime Sensei. Undoubtedly, you’ve all heard of Anime. Perhaps watched an episode or two of Dragonball Z, or remember a time when Pokemon cards were a form of school-yard currency. What is surprising, though, is the ever growing and vast community which devotes hours of their time to this unique and nuanced art form. To get a better look, we go to our classroom expert, Mitchel Riley, for his experiences as a part of anime’s world-wide community. At a very young age Mitchel became interested not only in anime but in Japanese culture. One of his first recollections of this was Japanese film. Starting, he says when, “we went to the local video store and rented Godzilla.”  Godzilla (1954) is the story of a giant lizard/dragon like monster who terrorizes the city of Tokyo. The film became a cultural icon around the globe, and for Mitchel it marked the beginning of his passion for Japanese cult...
Daya-Singh Whar Professor Cryer Composition 2 18 September 2018 Heavy Metal The heavy mental community is a very strong function of people with shared values, standards, and actions. Jared, a current student attending JCCC (Johnson County Community College), states that there are more than 100s of subgenres. Struggling to find a new taste in music, Jarred, seeks his father for innovative interests in the musical industry. He simply asked his father for more information over the musical choice. He got more than just a response, his father led him towards a new musical world. Inspired with the various number of genres from just one category, he pushed himself to listen to the other types of music that Heavy metal had to offer, with his top three favorite choices that included Metalcore, Deathcore, and Death mental. He has been greatly influenced by heavy metal and this influence is seen everywhere, including in modern music and modern society. The roots of Rock and Roll sta...

We have work shoes, shoes for weddings and dances, shoes for hanging around the house or going to the beach or pool. They can be a glimpse into the type of personality one has, or, the lifestyle they lead whether they know it or not. It is commonly said that you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes. Michael : EDM Community

Cole Hess Professor Cryer Engl 122 4 September 2018 Michael: Opening Up   Turns out dance festivals are about more than doing drugs and dancing, for a lot of people it is a communal escape from the responsibilities of the “real world”. This is supported by an interview conducted with my composition II classmate, Michael. These shows can be a nervous experience for many people, but with insight it’s easy to see this is a community that is accepting to all.   Electronic Dance Music (EDM) festivals are shows of music and typically lights, usually outside and at night. These festivals are different from most concerts, in that they can often span many days and nights. Also this community is different than most because it’s not a recurrence of community members you’ve seen at a festival before, it's just the idea of the community that keeps everyone together. One thing is for sure about EDM festivals, whether you’re dressed for show, there for dancing, or into the dru...

Aaron Hensley-The Artist

Image
David L. Foster Professor Cryer English Comp II 12 Sept. 2018 The Artist Aaron Hensley wasn’t the typical kid growing up with dreams of becoming a future doctor, lawyer, police officer, or professional athlete. By the age of twelve, he knew that he wanted to be an Artist.   Aaron’s love for painting didn’t happen overnight. His dad was the main source of influence. As a kid, Aaron would watch his dad paint in the garage and, as time went on, his love for painting grew. One day, he decided to pick up the brush for himself.  Painting came to him intuitively. He recalls an experience in second grade when some teachers hung a few of his paintings on the hall for the whole school to see.   He also found inspiration through his grade school art teacher, Mr. Grey. Aaron says, “Mr. Grey motivated me. He inspired me to believe I could one day be a great artist.”   After grade school, Aaron joined the Navy. However, ...
