Why EDM
I have always thought it was just pressing a space bar on a computer to make what some call music. After interviewing Clara I found out more about Electronic Dance Music also known as EDM and while it still is not a thing I like it is still very popular.
EDM started in the 1960’s and has evolved over the years. It became popular in the 1980’s and today it is one of the most popular types of music. Why would one pick EDM over other types of music I asked Clara “My friends were apart of  the community then I started listening to it.” She later continued on. “ I then discovered subgenres [of EDM]. To me it's less about the lyrics and more the beats.”
EDM fans do not go to concerts they go to something called raves. There is a stereotype about raves. That stereotype is that they are just wild uncontrolled parties with lots of lights. “ Raves are a good time” Clara said. She also mentioned some of the more well known EDM festivals. “ There is the electric forest which is a rave in a forest and has a theme of lost in the woods.” She also said “ the different types of raves for different people you have to find one that fits you.” One thing that Clara said that stuck out to me was “ It's like a huge family you can go to small local shows and make friends and then see those same friends at some the big festivals.” Which is something that is said about other types of music.
There are some things that are important to the EDM community. One big thing in the EDM community is raves and the DJ’s putting on a show. I asked Clara What is important to EDM “ Friendships and acceptance. A lot of ‘rave’ culture is just about accepting people as they are cause you get a lot of weirdos. But at the end of the day everyone is there to listen to music and have a good time.” That same statement is the same in some other types of music especially rock and metal.
EDM has many subgenres like all types of music. Some of those genres are House which is artist like Avicii And Daft punk. One of the most popular types of EDM Dubstep Some artist in this genre are Skrillex and 12th planet. Perhaps the most famous genres is Trap. Some artist in this genre are Heroes X Villains, UZ.  “ It is for everyone no matter the type of music you like there is something [in EDM] for everyone,” Clara said when I asked about If one subgenre stands out over the others. That is also common in all types of music.
I have learned at this point in time that as much as I may not realize it EDM is very much like other genres of music. That is something that was a surprise for me. I just figured it fit the stereotype of it being just pressing a button on a computer and you getting sound. As well as the stereotype of anyone can do it.
What stereotypes of EDM are true and which are fake. I asked Clara are the stereotypes of EDM true? “ [They are] somewhat true you can mix it with some other styles of real music.” She then continued “I have had friends ask me to play piano on some of their tracks in the past.” That was surprising to me I always thought the point of EDM was for it to be electronic not have real instruments and even some lyrics. “ The main thing is [EDM] can be whatever.” Clara said.
I was also curious to see if like other types of music are there mainstream and underground artist and if the genre itself  is also mainstream or underground. Some artist do not consider themselves EDM.
I was curious to see what someone in the EDM community if the there are mainstream or underground EDM artist. “ There are both” Clara said. She then said “ There are artist like diplo and DJ Khaled are more mainstream.” She the said “ Over time it has become more more mainstream.” Still it is not to the point of some types of music.

Why would one join the Electronic Dance Music community. For some like Clara it may have started off as a way to hang with friends but then it becomes more. Over time in this community you get this sense of belonging and being a part of a big family. For others it's more about having a good time and enjoys the beats of the music. I still do not know what to think about EDM for it still is different from my definition of music. However after hearing about this community it is very similar to my community. So I think what Clara said is true: “ it is for everyone no matter the type of music you like there is something [in EDM] for everyone.” is very true and is something that can be said about most things.
